Black Sea Storm Biography and Discography

Biography (ENG)

Since the year 2002, Black Sea Storm has been one of my musical outlets. During the 90s, I also had a solo project named Deniz’s Home, but I never released anything under the latter name. For almost a decade Black Sea Storm served me as a side project and laboratory while I was actively playing in bands as a bass player. I’ve made most of my career as a rocker on the bass playing primarily in two groups: Swoan of Geneva and Channing Cope of San Diego. I also performed as a stage musician with Kenseth Thibideau‘s solo project.

I was a part of Swoan form 1994 to1999, Channing Cope from 2002 to 2009, and KTB during the years 2010 and 2011. After spending a total of 11 and a half years in the US, I returned to Europe. I did not play with other musicians during the six years I spent in the old continent. This situation did not stop me from releasing two albums with Black Sea Storm.

In January 2017 I decided to move to Latin America. My Fender Jazz bass and I made it to Buenos Aires. I purchased a Fender Stratocaster and a sound card in the Argentinian capital and started to record new Black Sea Storm material on my laptop. I was able to release several single albums with my ultra-minimal recording solution.

In August 2018, I put all my heavy belongings in storage in Buenos Aires and decided to live my life as a nomad across Latin America. Although the nomadic lifestyle was perfect for me, something was missing to make the adventure a complete one. I needed to include music creation in my new lifestyle. In late December 2018, while I was in Qurétaro Mexico, I decided to buy a relatively cheap electro-acoustic guitar and adapt some of the Black Sea Storm songs to my newly purchased instrument. I decided to turn my nomadic approach to life into an ongoing Black Sea Storm world tour.

In early February, I started to play as a street musician in Lima, Peru. I played daily in parks while traveling. After briefly passing by Chile, I returned to Buenos Aires to record and release a couple of new songs with the electric bass and the electric guitar. I kept playing the streets of the Argentinian capital daily while I was recording new material.

In July 2019, I returned to Mexico and started to play live shows. My very first legitimate show happened to be on July 13th, 2019, in Mérida, at a performance place called El Teatrito Yucatan.

I ended up playing 13 shows in Mexico, followed by four shows in Péru. I came back to Buenos Aires to record new material. I did play at an open mic in Buenos Aires. After recording and releasing a couple of songs I put my heavy belongings again in storage and went back on tour. My first destination was Uruguay.

The plan was to play a few shows in Uruguay then go to Paraguay and head up north to eventually make it back to Mexico. Three days after arriving in Uruguay the so-called pandemic started and the Uruguayan authorities decided to close the borders. I ended up staying six months in Uruguay. I was able to record two songs and play a few shows despite the sanitary restrictions.

In late September 2020, once it was possible to travel again I flew back to Mexico. I was able to play several shows and record an alum with a producer named Kacho Olivares in the state of Sonora. After the recording of the album, I went back on the road heading up north up to Tijuana and then going south through the entire Baja California peninsula.

As my Mexican visa was close to expiring I flew to Guatemala from Los Cabos. I recorded two songs in Antigua Guatemala and flew back to Los Cabos with a new Mexican visa. I stayed a full six months in Mexico mostly in Baja California and Sinaloa. I did play the guitar a lot, and came up with new ideas, but I did not play any shows or recorded any songs during my fourth stay in Mexico.

I came to the realization that I had visited more places in Mexico than in my own country, so I decided to transpose my Latin American touring musician lifestyle to Türkiye.

In late November 2021, I flew from CDMX to Istanbul and started to play shows in various Turkish cities. As I am writing this in mid-July 2022 I’ve already played a total of 17 shows, in Istanbul, Bodrum, Konya, Eskişehir, Trabzon, Artvin, Rize, Hatay, Diyarbakır, and Edirne. I am planning on playing as many shows as I can until the end of Fall 2022 and then head back to Latin America.
